Team Heart had a great day at Chepstow to see Coole Charmer make his debut for us over fences. It was quite a high profile race as Thistlecrack was also making his novice chase debut! We had two entries on the day with the other at Bangor, but the ground was way too quick for our fella there so with the anticipated rain that Chepstow was due to have the night before the race, that was the chosen destination.
With Noel Fehily up at Bangor with a handful of rides, the very capable and very likeable David Noonan had the leg up and took a useful 3lb off Charmers back. When they jumped off, David dropped Charmer in at the rear with stable mate Shaky Gift. He was keen enough through the race and ran with great enthusiasm and jumped beautifully apart from an error at the third that made us all catch our breath briefly! Down the back straight, he was jumping so well he was making up lengths in the air and jumped himself in to second place. Turning in and Charmer was still travelling strongly and the only one travelling better was Thistlecrack. He jumped 5 out in second and was still in second when jumping 4 out, but he got a little bit low which took him off the bridle and then as they kicked on in front, the front three pulled away and he kept on one pace racing with Shaky Gift who got the better of us and David just kept him going to finish the race. He may have finished 5 of 5 but we couldn’t have been happier with his first run. He probably would have needed the run so to jump and travel as well as he did for the majority of the race was fabulous and he showed he certainly isn’t short of ability. ‘An eye catching first run’ some have quoted.
Another first for the day was me being interviewed by Luke Harvey in the paddock before the race! No such thing as bad publicity they say.
Charmer came out of the race really well and is ready to run again but as with most people, we desperately need some rain. As soon as we see a change in the weather and some proper cut in the ground we will be getting him entered up again.
Following a most encouraging first run for us, some of the current shareholders increased their shares and I am now pleased to say that Coole Charmer is sold out. When things settle down and I catch my breath from the whirlwind last few months, we will be looking for horse number two 🙂
